My Brother Fax Machine is Ringing Continuously When Put in Tele fax Mode

Fax/Tel Mode helps you automatically manage incoming calls by recognizing whether they are fax or voice calls and handling them in one of the following ways:

- Faxes will be automatically received.

- Voice calls will start the F/T ring to tell you to pick up the line. The F/T ring is a fast double-ring made by your machine.

If you're having problems receiving incoming faxes and your machine shares the same line as your incoming voice calls, follow the steps listed below:

1. Press any key on the control panel to illuminate the machine's display. Does the display respond, or is it blank?

- If the display responds, go to step 2.

- If the display is blank, refer to: Blank display

2. Check for a clear & crisp dial tone:

a. Press Hook/Hold on the lower left-hand side of your machine's control panel.

b. Listen for a clear & crisp dial tone.

- If there is a dial tone, but it has static, interference, a stutter, or is very faint/low, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 2c.

- If there is a clear & crisp dial tone, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 7.

- If there's no dial tone, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 3.

c. Static, noise interference, or a broken/low dial tone will prevent your machine and the sender's machine from communicating with each other. Please contact your telephone service provider for further assistance.

3. What type of telephone service are you using?

- If you must be connected to the internet to make a phone call, you're likely using DSL, VoIP, or magicJack services. Go to step 4.

- If you're using a traditional phone service through the local phone company, go to step 5.

4. Your machine may not work with some DSL, VoIP, or magicJack services. Brother does not guarantee that fax transmission will work over VoIP phone lines (cable systems such as Cox, Charter, Time Warner, Comcast, FiOS, magicJack, and Vonage). Internet traffic can interfere with faxing because VoIP communicates through the internet and not through a standard analog telephone line. The data sent over the internet for fax is digitized into packets, which can cause data loss.

To use your machine to receive faxes while using one of these services, connect one end of your telephone cord to the port labeled LINE on your Brother machine. Make sure to connect the other end of the telephone cord to a modem, interface box, phone adapter, splitter, or other similar device.

note icon If you have questions about how to connect your machine to the DSL, VoIP, or magicJack service, please contact your service provider.

a. Verify that your telephone cord/line is connected to the port on your machine labeled LINE.

- If the telephone cord/line is already in the port labeled LINE, please contact your DSL, VoIP, or magicJack service provider for further assistance. Without a dial tone, your machine won't be able to receive faxes.

- If the telephone cord/line is connected to the port labeled EXT, go to step 4b.

b. Remove the telephone cord/line from the EXT port and connect it to the port labeled LINE on your Brother machine.

c. Press Hook/Hold and listen for a clear & crisp dial tone.

- If there is a dial tone, but it has static, interference, a stutter, or is very faint/low, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 4d.

- If there is a clear & crisp dial tone now, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 7.

- If there's still no dial tone, press Hook/Hold again. Please contact your DSL, VoIP, or magicJack service provider for further assistance. Without a dial tone, your machine won't be able to receive faxes.

d. Static, noise interference, or a broken/low dial tone will prevent your machine and the sender's machine from communicating with each other. Please contact your telephone service provider for further assistance.

5. Verify that your telephone cord/line is connected correctly:

a. Is the telephone cord/line connected to the port on your machine labeled LINE?

- If yes, the telephone cord/line is already connected to the port labeled LINE, go to step 6.

- If no, the telephone cord/line is connected to the port labeled EXT, go to step 5b.

b. Remove the telephone cord/line from the port labeled EXT and connected it to the port labeled LINE on your Brother machine.

c. Press Hook/Hold and listen for a clear & crisp dial tone.

- If there is a dial tone, but it has static, interference, a stutter, or is very faint/low, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 5d.

- If there is a clear & crisp dial tone now, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 6.

- If there's still no dial tone, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 7.

d. Static, noise interference, or a broken/low dial tone will prevent your machine and the sender's machine from communicating with each other. Please contact your telephone service provider for further assistance.

6. Remove the telephone cord/line from the port on your machine labeled LINE and connect it to a known-working telephone.

a. Test for a dial tone on the telephone.

- If there is a dial tone on the telephone, go to step 6b.

- If there's no dial tone on the telephone, the issue is related to the telephone line or wall jack. Please contact your telephone service provider for further assistance.

b. Remove the telephone cord/line from the telephone and reconnect it to the port labeled LINE on your Brother machine.

c. Press Hook/Hold and listen for a clear & crisp dial tone.

- If there is a dial tone, but it has static, interference, a stutter, or is very faint/low, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 6d.

- If there is now a clear & crisp dial tone, press Hook/Hold again and go to step 7.

- If there's still no dial tone, press Hook/Hold again and go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

d. Static, noise interference, or a broken/low dial tone will prevent your machine and the sender's machine from communicating with each other. Please contact your telephone service provider for further assistance.

- You can select 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 40 seconds, or 70 seconds.

g. Press Stop/Exit.

note icon Even if the caller hangs up, or if you answer the phone line within a few seconds, the machine will continue to double-ring for the selected amount of time.

10. Ask someone to send you a test fax.

- If the test fax is successful , your machine is functioning properly.

- If the test fax isn't successful , go to step 11.

11. Adjust the Compatibility setting to Basic (for VoIP ):

13. Since the problem is continuing, it is likely related to the telephone line or to something in your setup, such as other interfering devices, incorrect connections, or unknown phone service features.  We recommend that you contact your telephone service provider and double-check your setup.

Many environmental parameters can affect faxing (especially if using DSL, VoIP, Vonage, or magicJack service).  Here are some additional suggestions to have better success faxing over a VoIP line:

- Verify that no other applications, computers, or devices are downloading, uploading, or streaming data.  While VoIP operates separately from the computer and they do not normally interfere with each other, the amount of data that can be transmitted from all devices on the system at one time is limited.  If a fax is being sent or received and a computer begins downloading, it will consume bandwidth and could prevent the fax from going through.

- Send or receive faxes at an "off-peak" time.  Faxing over VoIP is an Internet application.  If you have ever noticed a website that normally loads quickly taking a long time to load, then they have experienced network congestion.  The same thing can happen to a fax sent over VoIP.  Data packets may be delayed, and since the fax communication is time-sensitive, the fax transmission times out.  You may be able to avoid this by having the fax sent later.

Suggestions to offer to your phone provider:

- Clear any stutter tones which indicate voice mail or messages.  Disabling voice mail and turning off Call Waiting are options.

- Make sure that your DSL, VoIP, Vonage, or magicJack service provider has G.711 set up for your fax line. (Not Bandwidth Saver or G.729).  Using G.711 for VoIP will give the best voice quality which can improve fax communication over IP networks.

- Some routers/modems are not as compatible for faxing.  Trying another router/modem brand or model may resolve faxing issues with VoIP.

Issues related to the telephone configuration of the machine are not covered under Brother's limited warranty.
